For Hilliard the ability to create work using the language of clay is paramount.
By working with unfired/green brick it allows her to to explore beyond the more recognised confines of ceramic. The process allows her to work with a mass of clay specific to the current project.
Hilliard has a strong interest in architecture and how we use the spaces we create for ourselves. She relishes the opportunity to work to commission to create site specific work, either in relief or three dimensions. The use of carved or sculptural brick allows movement and form whilst maintaining the engineering capacities required in a building.
It opens up a whole arena of creative thinking and opportunities.
