Historically, Hilliard has used drawing to evolve ideas for her sculpture.

However, over the past few years drawing has become a tool of expression for Karen.

She finds charcoal a versatile and dynamic medium, simultaneously giving instant strength and subtlety to the subject.

The trigger for her drawings come, for the most part, from her interest in animals and in particular their form, movement and expression.
